Salted Caramel Brownies

a combination of my two favorite things, salty and sweet

You will need:

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon table salt
  • 1/4 cup sea salt flakes (for topping)
  • 1 cup caramel
  • optional: 1/2 cup chocolate chips

Tips: After burning my first batch of caramel, I used caramel melting bits for an easy way out. This recipe can also be made gluten free using King Arthur Gluten Free Measure for Measure flour!

Directions:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees and grease a 9×9 inch pan
  • In a large bowl, add in all dry ingredients and stir together (exclude chocolate chips, sea salt flakes, and caramel)
  • In the same bowl, add in the wet ingredients (exclude chocolate chips, sea salt flakes, and caramel) and mix on low until the ingredients are well incorporated
  • Once well mixed, add in chocolate chips and stir. Check the bowl to make sure there aren’t any unmixed ingredients at the bottom of the bowl
  • Pour in 1/2 the brownie batter into the pan
  • On top of the batter in the pan, swirl in melted caramel
  • Pour in the remaining batter on top of the swirl, put the pan in the oven and let the brownies bake for 30-40 minutes. After 30 minutes, check with a toothpick in the center of the batter to see if they are fully baked. If the toothpick comes out with batter on it, bake for an additional 5-7 minutes and check again
  • When the brownies are fully baked, remove them from the oven and let them cool for 20 minutes
  • Once cooled, top with more melted caramel and sea salt flakes. Enjoy!
